Beginning of the Tournament!

A few days ago my reading group had been reading a book called 'Beginning of the Tournament'. And so on we have been answering questions based on the text of the story. Here is my completed activity of questions.

Beginning of the Tournament

                                               We are learning to identify the theme of a story.

Learn:

Who are the main characters in the story? Write a brief description of three characters.

Dad ~ Dad is a very sporty and traditional man his wife died a long time ago and so on dad tries his best to keep his cultural alive for more generations. Dad is a big hockey fan and he has 2 children. He coaches

Jerry ~ Jerry is a friend of the dad’s son, he is known to be a great hockey player as he used to play hockey. He has freckles, ginger hair he is very picky and clean. He is also a pakeha.

Witi ~ Witi is a scholar, he goes university, he is also a big hockey fan. Witi is a male Maori.

Why do you think felt it was important for the main character to return home?

Generations won’t know where they come from. Also to keep the relationship and to keep in touch with the entire Whanau. It’s traditional. To play hockey also.

How do you think Jerry  would have felt meeting the family?

Nervous and Shy because he is a new environment also because he stands out from the rest, It’s the feeling you get when it’s your first day at or of a new school.

Why are there less people playing the sport now?

Because people are leaving to go to the city and it’s hard to contact them to come back. Also because the population of Maori’s together are getting lesser and even more lesser.

Why did Jerry stand out?

Jerry standed out because he is a pakeha he is tall, ginger coloured hair, freckles on his face and he is dressed different from the rest which made Jerry stand out from the rest.

Is the game being played fairly?

No because last year if that same team won and won again would that be fair? No, I think every year there should be a new winner so everyone and every team could have a chance at winning.

What do you think it is like for being at university?

Hardworking but very creative.

What might the main theme of the book be?

Remember who you are. Maintaining your culture. Honoring the past not the present just yet. Be thankful for who you are.
