Ripper Rugby

Ripper Rugby

Today room 7 from Glenbrae School had there first Ripper Rugby training in 2016 on the field. Our coach’s name is Matt, he comes from the club called Varsity. At Varsity he teaches contact and noncontact sports. Matt coaches children/students in Auckland and around New Zealand.

In Ripper Rugby you don’t make any contact with anyone example;(No Tackling), that’s why it is a noncontact sport. Ripper Rugby contains 2 tags which are the same colour hanging from the sides of you. If you are in a different team and the other team has the ball you will have to rip off 1 tag from the person who has the ball before he/she passes it to someone else. You cannot pass the ball forward, you have to back pass and at the same time you have to have great timing and communicate with others.

First, we started up with a warm up called Ball Tag, people who are in have to hold the ball with two hands and touch them with the ball, if they touch you with the ball you will have to do a stretch given. Then we played passes, there would be 4 people across from you and 4 or more people in a line across from the 4 people across from you. We then played and some people missed the throw and some people did some great passes.

After we had to grab a sticking belt and two coloured tags and put it on the both sides of your belt. That’s when we began to play Bull Rush. Taki was our first person who wanted to be in the middle. So heaps of students from the whole lot except for Taki got in and the last person standing was Miami.

I learnt that we have to communicate when passing the ball to each other and to pass the ball in time.

I felt excited because we were going to play Ripper Rugby and that we got to play. My fourth favourite

Game was Bull Rush even though I didn’t last that long.
