Today Taha group worked on a maths word problem with Mrs Tofa on the mat after number talk. I myself were in Taha group. The problem given was challenging but it was a good challenge for us, for me it made me really think.
But the problem was about Mrs Tofa going to Samoa, but having to have the right limited kg; in her luggage and carry on bag, the limit was 7kg for carry on and for luggage is 23 kg. But Mrs Tofa had 12kg in her carry on and 21.7kg in her luggage. In her carry on she had 2 lollipop bags which weighed 1.5 kgs each. She had to take two of the lollibags out.
The questions was will she still be able to take on the lollipop bags?, Was her carry on bag at the right limit?.
In my little big group, we had answered these questions and tried to solve them: Below is our strategy....
1.12 kg (Mrs Tofa's current weigh of her carry on) - 3 kg (1.5 Lollipop bag each,1.5+1.5=3) = 9kg -Carry on.
Limit is 7kg - No she cannot take 9kgs on.
2. She could have added 1 lollipop bag into her suitcase/luggage.
21.7 + 1.5 = 23.2 (Its alright to have 23.2 but not allowed 24kg and over).
So she would leave 1 lollipop bag and take 1 in her luggage.
I really enjoyed doing this word problem.
